Rhine (pseudonym for Ashlee Cowles and Danielle Stinson) follows up Horses of Fire with the epic conclusion of their Trojan War retelling from the perspectives of Andromache, Rhea, Helen, and Cassandra. This feminist retelling recreates the Trojan War through the eyes of four women--Andromache, wife of Hector; Helen, stolen Greek queen; Rhea, servant and spy; and Cassandra, cursed prophetess. Rhea sneaks out to joins the enslaved women in the Greek camp and takes information back to Andromache, though she is torn because she has fallen in love with Ajax, the mighty Greek warrior. Pregnant with Hector's son, Andromache begs Hector not to fight the Greek warrior Achilles. The once-hated Helen tries to caution Hector about the Greek plans, while Cassandra, with her strange prophecies, warns Hector and King Priam of Troy's destruction. Working together, the four women also discover that there is a traitor within King Priam's circle while they try to smuggle Andromache's son out of Troy. Rhine's follow-up to Horses of Fire (2023) can be read by itself, although the reader needs some familiarity with the Iliad and the Trojan War to fully appreciate it. This sweeping epic is recommended for those who love Claire Heywood's Daughters of Sparta (2021) and Pat Barker's The Women of Troy (2021), and anyone interested in ancient history.
