The first of its kind, this book documents Texas Ranger units since the service's 1823 inception. Although it is the most comprehensive book to date, independent scholar Ivey acknowledges that destructive fires in 1855 and 1881, along with inconsistent record keeping, have prevented a thorough account of muster rolls. Divided into ten chronological chapters, the book covers periods of organized activity, like the two-year engagement in the U.S.-Mexican War. Each chapter opens with a vivid survey of relevant historical events. A list of companies, officers, and headquarters follows. A wonderful, one-stop reference for historians.
